You can aerate after rain when the soil has drained enough to be moist and firm underfoot. Wait if it squishes, smears, holds puddles, or sticks heavily to your tools. There is no universal 24-hour or 48-hour waiting period: rainfall, soil texture, drainage, and conditions before the storm all affect readiness.
For a small lawn, check the actual work area before bringing out equipment. A dry patio and dry grass blades do not tell you what is happening below the surface.

Read the ground before reading the clock

Two neighboring lawns can respond differently to the same storm. One may have freely draining soil and an open, sunny exposure. The other may collect runoff beside a shaded fence. Even within one yard, a high spot and a low corner may need different decisions.

Make a short inspection from the lawn's edge

Look beneath the leaves

Can I aerate the same day it rains?
Possibly, after light rain on previously dry ground, if soil and footing checks are satisfactory. After heavy rain or on already wet soil, postpone. The date of the rainfall matters less than the condition it leaves behind.
Should I wait exactly two days?
No. Two days can be too short for a poorly drained area or unnecessary for another lawn. Check the intended work area again instead of relying on a fixed countdown.
Can I spike aerate to help a puddle drain?
